Flo Leighton, MSN, PMHNP-BC, is an ANCC Board Certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner specializing in Psychotherapy and Psychopharmacology. Flo received her Master’s degree in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing from New York University and her undergraduate degree from Mercy College. She currently serves as an adjunct clinical professor in psychiatry at New York University’s Accelerated Bachelors of Science in Nursing program.
Flo has been in Behavioral Health field for over ten years. Her experience includes two years as a staff nurse at NY Presbyterian Hospital/ Westchester Division on the inpatient child and adolescent units. She subsequently worked on the inpatient adult behavioral health unit and the adult emergency department of Columbia University Medical Center, where she functioned as Charge Nurse in the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program. Her exposure in these settings have facilitated a greater understanding of the diagnosis and treatment of many psychiatric conditions.
Flo’s graduate clinical experiences include working with young adults at the NYU Counseling and Wellness Center. She spent a semester at Housing Works Outpatient program working with clients with co-existing medical and psychiatric conditions to facilitate community referrals, conduct intake evaluations, and psychotherapy for her clients.
In 2015, Flo was the first clinical nurse at Columbia University Medical Center to receive the Outstanding Humanism in Patient Care Award from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, classes of 2016/2017. She was nominated for the Clinical Nurse Excellence award in 2014 and was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society of Nursing in 2015. Flo has been an active member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association since 2012.
Flo maintains a passion for community involvement and volunteerism. She has volunteered for Leukemia Lymphoma Society (LLS) as a cancer support group facilitator. She participated in the LLS Team in Training program and has been a guest speaker at local elementary schools for the LLS Pennies for Patients program. Most recently, Flo assisted in coordinating the New York Presbyterian health fair in order to promote mental health awareness and screening for the Washington Heights community.
